About Our New Patios
A new patio starts below ground, not with the slabs: we excavate to the right depth and build up a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base in layers, getting the falls right so water runs off rather than pooling against the house. The paving then goes down on a mortar bed, jointed and pointed, with edges restrained by haunching so the patio stays put under foot traffic and furniture.

Common Questions
What's the sub-base actually for?
It's what stops the patio moving, sinking or cracking. A compacted layer of hardcore, usually MOT Type 1, gives the paving something solid and free-draining to sit on rather than loose or wet ground.
Do I need planning permission for a new patio?
Most domestic patios don't need planning permission, but it can depend on things like proximity to boundaries or whether the property has specific restrictions. We can flag anything that looks like it might need checking.
How soon can I walk on a new patio?
It depends on the laying method and the weather, but you should keep heavy use, furniture and vehicles off it for at least a few days while the bedding and jointing sets properly.
