Composite decking boards are made from wood fibre and recycled plastic with a capped outer layer that resists staining, fading and splintering without the need for annual oiling or staining. The sub-frame underneath is built the same way as a timber deck, on proper footings or adjustable feet, with boards fixed using hidden clip systems for a clean finish with no visible fixings.

What's the difference between composite and timber decking?

Composite boards are made from wood fibre and recycled plastic with a protective cap, so they don't need staining or oiling the way timber does and they hold their colour better over time. Timber generally costs less up front but needs more ongoing maintenance to keep it looking good and to protect it from rot.

Does composite decking need any maintenance at all?

It needs far less than timber, but it's not entirely maintenance-free. A regular clean to remove leaves, algae and general dirt keeps the surface looking right and stops it getting slippery, particularly in shaded or damp spots.

Can composite decking be laid straight onto grass or soil?

No, it needs the same kind of sub-frame as a timber deck, supported on proper footings or adjustable feet, so the boards stay level and don't sit in contact with damp ground.
